General Information

Revision rhinoplasty is a corrective surgery performed for patients who have previously undergone nose surgery but did not achieve sufficient aesthetic or breathing-related improvement. Compared with primary rhinoplasty, it is usually a more complex process because the previous surgery may have changed the cartilage, bone, skin, scar tissue and internal nasal support structures.

The degree of the problem may differ from patient to patient. In some cases a limited correction may be enough, while in other patients more comprehensive reconstruction may be required to correct advanced deformities. Revision rhinoplasty requires detailed anatomical knowledge, full control of the entire nasal framework and significant surgical experience. Op. Rib Cartilage Harvesting Uses a Small Incision and Usually Does Not Make the Process as Difficult as Expected

When rib cartilage is needed, it is usually harvested through a small incision of approximately 2-3 cm. Contrary to common concerns, this step does not usually make the recovery process as difficult as patients expect. The decision to use rib cartilage is made only when the nose needs stronger support or reconstruction.

Cartilage is used in all aesthetic nose surgeries during the shaping stage. In most primary rhinoplasty procedures, the patient’s own nasal cartilage is the standard source. However, if a patient has already had surgery and the remaining nasal cartilage is not sufficient to reshape or support the nose, cartilage from another source may be required.

Op. Dr. Ferhat Küçük frequently prefers rib cartilage in such cases because it provides strong structural support. Ear cartilage may also be considered in selected situations, but the final decision depends on the deformity, previous surgical changes and the amount of support needed.

The exact waiting period before revision rhinoplasty depends on the patient’s healing process, skin structure and the type of problem that needs to be corrected. In general, it is healthier to wait until swelling decreases and the tissues become more stable. This period is often close to one year after the first surgery.

In very rare situations such as infection, hematoma or a serious early postoperative problem, surgical intervention may be considered earlier to solve the problem. These are exceptional cases and must be evaluated individually.
